Abstract:
In Senegalese and other West African divination systems it is not the diviner but the divinatory system itself that is seen as the author of the divinatory enunciation. This is also true for cowrie divination. The authoring role of the shells or other oracular agencies is one of the most puzzling facts of divination. Tracing the terminology used in Mandinka to refer to this fact, this talk explores the significance of this emic perspective within the larger divinatory process. Comparing Mandinka divination with other divinatory traditions, the article highlights divinatory authorship and authority as an important characteristic of divination's ritual and linguistic properties.
