摘要:

Much scholarly and popular ink has been spilled in debates regarding whether contemporary PRC economic investments in Africa constitute a “New Chinese Empire.” Focusing on macrolevel politics and state-to-state relations, both sides of this debate tend to ignore the everyday lived realities of Chinese migrants and local Africans. In this talk, based on two years of ethnographic fieldwork at Chinese-operated mining enterprises in rural Zambia, I analyze the intersecting racialized, gendered, sexed, and classed hierarchies that generate different kinds of emotional and physical precarities for both women and men in Chinese-operated sites of gendered racial capitalism and how the distribution of these precarities and bodily burdens fall more heavily on some than others. I will show that these disparities result from the institutional policies of the Chinese state and state-owned enterprises, and that ultimately the profit models of these companies rest, implicitly, on the extraction and exploitation of women’s affective and reproductive labor.
