Abstract,
The fashion for art forms from China, or from European productions translating Western imaginaries about China, in the early modern period, carachterized stylistic languages defined as chinoiserie. In my paper, I will discuss such productions from the Italian context, a territory of research that has not yet received the proper scholarly attention. The main focus is on the links and relationships between real Chinese art object and pictures, and the forms produced locally. Such an artistic dialogue reveals two main poetics characterizing chinoiserie. The first one is constructed on direct borrowings from Chinese art, while the second defines a complex translation of forms and imaginaries belonging to the Italian artistic milieu. Here, I explore a trajectory made by book illustrations, architectural decorations, and imaginaries of porcelain productions.
