Symbolic Density and Demographic Depletion

Drawing on many years of research in Greece, Italy, and Thailand, the speaker will explore how the combined forces of religious leadership, ruthless political ambition and neoliberal finance management (including the tourist industry and real estate businesses) conspire to accelerate the expulsion of those working-class families whose ancestors had contributed to the present wealth and monumental character of significant central areas of, especially, capital cities. Symbolic density is the phenomenon whereby inanimate objects and dwellings accrue national or religious significance and are consequently valued at ever higher prices. Symbolic density often accumulates in inverse proportion to the size of the residential population, the latter increasingly consisting of the most privileged and the wealthiest citizens, and may be used (sometimes in the form of conservation and excavation) as a way of “justifying” mass forced evictions.
